Our journey has ENDED! - we made it!!Phase 2 of 3 Oban to Stornoway 320km Oban to Stornoway 5th - 14th June The idea was to take this section slowly and just get into the frame of mind for the big crossing to the Faroes. With nine days of paddling north and eight days of northerly winds it didn't turn out that way. Average speeds were reduced from a predicted 7.5mph to a miserable 3.5. My waistline measurement suffered a similiar reduction. On the positive side all the kit has been well tested, the kayaking calluses on both hands are in an advanced stage of development, my backside is pretty well moulded to the new boat and I'm hardened to the grim task of putting on cold damp paddling gear. Three legs remaining: Stornoway-Butt of Lewis- North Rona-Faroe Islands Stornoway to Butt of Lewis 28th June = Time taken of first leg - 8 hours 37 mins and 11 seconds Butt of Lewis to Rona - 29th June = Time of second leg -13 hours 48 mins and 22 seconds Rona to Faroes - we made it! 74 hours, 11 minutes and 28 secondsKeep track of our progress use our SPOT for the paddle to the Faroes:
Expedition progress and training. Thanks to SPOT Satellite GPS messenger technology you will be able to track the progress of the expedition throughout the trip This is a crucial safety aspect for the final 2 legs of the expedition from the Butt of lweis to the Faroes Islands. The paddles expect to be at sea for up to 2 to 3 days and will at stages be over 160km from the nearest land. The SPOT satellite GPS messenger allows the paddlers to 1) identify their position and 2) indicate that all is going to plan, 3)indicate they are in trouble 4) call in the emergency rescue services. The team members have been training for this crossing for 18 months.
