WIN OVER £5,000 OF THE BEST
SEA KAYAKING GEAR and TRAINING

For those of you who require a little temptation before opening your wallet WE HAVE IT. All of the companies that have generously supplied equipment for the expedition have also kindly donated essential items to a prize fund that is on offer to whoever gets closest to predicting the time it will take to paddle from Stornoway to The Faroe Isles. A total distance of 410 kilometres.

Even if everyone makes the minimum £2 donation with each predicted time we hope to raise a significant amount for the training of future volunteers. We are right behind the RNLi’s current philosophy: ‘Train one to Save many’. If you can help us get £1 for each of the 200,000 strokes we think we’ll take we will exceed all expectations.

AND THE WINNER IS: Leivur Vitalis, Faroe Islands

Leivur's time (96:12:22) came within 24min 39sec of the final time (96:37:01)

THE RULES

1:  All entries must be made on the expedition website with donations being made on justgiving.com.

2:  Predicted times must be made in hours/mins/seconds e.g.  81hours - 51minutes - 21seconds

3:  Entries can be made up until 24hrs after leaving North Rhona. This date is entirely dependant on the weather so please follow the web updates.

4:  In the case of a tie, the entry made on the earliest date, and earliest time on that date, will be declared the WINNER.

5:  100% of the contributions will go towards the R.N.L.I.

6:  There is no limit on the number of entries per person.

7:  The clock will stop the moment we set foot on the Faroes.  The clock will be stopped by the expedition paddlers and will be verified by SPOT  satellite GPS messenger.  Should we fail to make it to the Faroes the clock will stop the moment we request assistance from the emergency services.  Again this will be verified by SPOT satellite GPS messenger. Should we call off the crossing attempt and return to safety under their own steam the time will be taken at the point of 'turn around' and confirmed by SPOT GPS.

8.  Only the TIME SPENT IN THE BOATS will count. The clock will not run while the expedition team are on land at  Butt of Lewis and North Rhona.

8.  The winner will be announced on the website within 7 days of arrival on the Faroes.

9.  We encourage all entrants to make the recommended minimum donation for each entry they make.

10. The prize will be presented at the 2009’ Storm Gathering’ Sea Kayak Symposium in Cornwall, UK.

ASSISTANCE WITH YOUR ESTIMATION

1: The total distance is 410 kilometres.

2: The average speed for a fully laden kayak in normal conditions is 6 km per hour (this includes five minutes of rest each hour).

3: The journey will be split into three legs

        1) Stornoway to Butt of Lewis          52 km

        2) Butt of Lewis to North Rhona      72 km

        3) North Rhona  to Faroe Isles        276 km

4: We are planning the following:

Legs 1 and 2: will be paddled in one session with no more than five minutes rest per hour.

Leg 3: we will take 5 hours rest every twenty four and five minutes rest for each hour of paddling.

5: We intend to take a slight detour to the west to take advantage of the gulf stream and to avoid being sucked in to the Norwegian sea. This is likely to add 40-50 kilometres to the length of leg 3.
